(Churches Are Serving Together)
CAST invites...
All congregations in Beaver County are invited to join in partnership through CAST. The requirements of a participating church include:
1) A monthly collection of money, nonperishable food items, soap and paper products;
2) Attendance by a representative to the Advisory Board, and
3) Provision of volunteers who receive training and help when needed. As we know from Scripture, “A house divided cannot stand,” and by banding together in an alliance such as Churches Are Serving Together, Inc. (CAST) with pooled talents and resources, we can address the needs and be a support system for people to possibly make permanent changes.
CAST is...
...a nonprofit interfaith organization seeking to bring all churches in Beaver County in unity to serve the needs of people who come to the participating churches. This united approach has been established to help families and individuals in crisis through a variety of services. CAST has received a 501(c)3 designation as a charitable organization and all contributions are tax deductible. CAST is a United Way Donor option organization (code 9345).

SMART CHANGES CLASSES
Two classes are held every year in the spring and fall, lasting 10 weeks in duration on money management, grocery shopping, goal setting resources other than money, etc. This program takes place in our office. The student receives folders of information, a bag of groceries or paper products each week, and play money if they show up on time and make suggestions. They can spend their play money at an auction at the end of the 10 weeks of classes. We put four new items on a table each week.
GRADUATE PROGRAM
In 1997, a graduate class was added, made up of the people who attended the 15-week course. They meet with the teacher 8 times a year to help them stay on the budgets they have set up and to learn new things that will help them manage their lives. In 2000, the group started to put together a cookbook and to plan an outing together.
BACK TO SCHOOL PROJECT
In August 2007, 329 children ages 4-18 received a new school outfit, backpack, school supplies and a shoe certificate. This was the sixth year for this project. It has grown each year since its inception, with almost 3,900 children receiving help.
G.E.D. CLASSES
In January 1998 CAST became a G.E.D. site in connection with Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Labor Management Committee (SPALMC). A teacher is provided from SPALMC twice a week for a total of 6 hours and volunteers from our participating churches help with tutoring the students.
To date, 92 people have taken classes, with everyone at least moving up grade levels, and 21 have received their G.E.D.s.
S.E.L.F.
In March 1998 a gardening program called Take Good Care of Your S.E.L.F. was started for people with low incomes to grow gardens. Penn State Extension Agricultural Master Gardener Program, through director Lee Miller, provides the piece of ground. The instruction for gardening is provided by Jim Irwin, a Master Gardener and volunteer. Donations and volunteers provide the seeds, tools, and transportation. The participants need only to labor to produce the abundance of vegetables.
SATURDAY FIX BRIGADE
The Fix-It Brigade is a program in conjunction with First Presbyterian Church (Beaver) done on one Saturday a month, running from April to September. Volunteers from both First Presbyterian and other churches are asked to do simple jobs around the homes of elderly, disabled, frail, people living on a fixed income.
HOLIDAY OUTREACH

Update #12 - Library of First Reformed Presbyterian Church
A sampling of DVDs is now available in the audio-visual section of our library which we would like to expand.
On Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, comedian Ben Stein travels the world speaking to members of the scientific community on a search for answers to the quandary that people’s adherence to evolution or intelligent design presents. It reveals what happens to educators and scientists who reject the theory of evolution.
Why It Matters, a Creation Ministries International project, features Dr. Carl Wieland and shows that origins cannot be just a “side issue” for Christians.
For heart-warming wholesome family night viewing, try The Foundling, the 50-minute TV premiere DVD of The Waltons.
For fans of Janette Oke’s fiction, several titles are now available on DVD including Love Comes Softly directed by Michael Landon, Jr. Each video is between 80 and 90 minutes in viewing time.
Fireproof starring Kirk Cameron, whose role as a heroic fire captain is a tale of a transformed life through faith, underlines the fireman’s code “Never Leave Your Partner Behind.”
Flywheel is the story of a man who meets God in his used car business as he sets to work to restore a classic convertible and finds that God intends to restore him as well.
The librarians are grateful to the deacon board and whoever else is responsible for adding shelves in the library. Thank you!

Center Outreach Bible Study at Schaefers’, 7 p.m.
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – New Song, Geneva College’s nine-member music ministry group, will perform a concert on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. in the John H. White Chapel in Old Main. The concert will feature drama performed by the group, as well as a capella versions of the psalms, hymns, spirituals and contemporary Christian music.
Members of New Song spend a large portion of their summer touring North America, and rarely have the opportunity to perform a concert on Geneva’s campus. “We want to reach out to all of our friends and fans in the area and give them a chance to get a taste of what we devote our summers to,” says sophomore and New Song member Adam Sheffer. “It should be a great time for everyone involved!”
Admission is free.

Missionary
Some of you will remember Stacie Shopp who used to minister in Russia.
For over a year she has been ministering in Athens, Greece, working in Omonia, “the heart of the city’s ‘ghetto’ area.”
She works in the Athens Refugee Center there where the gospel is lived and proclaimed.
Join her in praying for the women on the street, for the drug addicts, for the refugees wandering aimlessly.
Pray for the restorative work of the gospel in the hearts and lives of the people.
Pray for Stacie as she rides the bus 45 minutes each day from her home to near the Acropolis and walks to Omonia and the Refugee Center.
She prays Psalm 139:7-12 would be realized through her ministry to hurting people who need to know they need the Great Physician.

Geneva College’s "The Genevans"
Beaver Falls, Pa. – Recently returned from a tour of Southeastern United States, Geneva College’s acclaimed mixed choir, The Genevans, will perform a free home concert at 8 p.m. on March 27 and 28 at the John H. White Chapel on Geneva’s campus.
Using the theme song for this concert is “Mourning into Dancing” by the contemporary Christian composer James Ward, the choir will sing a wide variety of music styles, from the Renaissance to contemporary, from folk songs to Spirituals and anthems. The concert will include motets from Victoria’s “Lamentations of Jeremiah” and the beloved “Super flumina Babylonis” of Palestrina. Also featured will be music by two great composers with special anniversaries this year: Felix Mendelssohn (b. 1809) and Henry Purcell (b. 1659). Rounding out the program are folk song settings by Johannes Brahms and humorous works by Mozart and others.
Two small groups from within the choir will also sing: Grace Notes (women’s sextet) and Eight Bells (barbershop).
Established in 1938, The Genevans represent the merger of Geneva’s original men’s and women’s glee clubs. Since then, the choir has performed across the United States and Canada, as well as in ten European countries, to significant acclaim.
The Genevans have been directed for twenty-seven years by Dr. Robert Copeland, a Geneva alumnus who earned his M.Mus. and Ph.D. degrees from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Prior to joining the Geneva faculty, he served in the U.S. Army and taught in Kansas for ten years. Dr. Copeland is also an active elder in his church.
The concert is open to the public, and attendance is free. For more information, contact the music department at 724-847-6660
